Smart Gilas In Action In Australia
Part of the Smart Gilas' preparation for the 2012 London Olympics are their overseas basketball exposure. They've gone as far as Dubia wherein they competed against The National Team of Qatar and Lebanon led by fahdi el khatib. The motion offense of the Smart Gilas Team helped them win the game against Lebanon to the tune of 91-86. The Lebanon Team beat the Philippine Team in the last Fiba Asia Championship. They denied us of a slot at the 2009 Beijing Olympics. This time, the Smart Gilas Team beat them. The Smart Gilas is now in Sydney, Australia. They are having series of games there. Their first game there was against the Sydney Comets. It was a close game. Japhet Aguilar had two monster dunks and their two pointguards, Mark Baroca and Lasseter held their ground against the huge and hefty pointguards of the other team. In the end the Smart Gilas Team won with the score of 93-81. Marnel Mac-Mac Baracael from The Far Eastern University, Dylan Ababou from The University of Santo Tomas, Mark Baroca also from Far Eastern University, Chris Tiu their team captain from Ateneo De Manila University, Greg Slaughter from the University of Cebu Lancers, and of course our fighting pride and flag bearer, the 6 foot 9 power forward who is a standout from the Western Kentucky University, who once played for the Ateneo De Manila University for a year and was once a teamate of Captain Chris Tiu and thus they are reunited, this player's name is Japhet Aguilar. He vowed to bring back the glory days in basketball to the Philippines. Those players played really well that they win against the Sydney Comets. There were also key reserves that played big for the team. They are Jason Ballesteros who is a standout from the San Sebastian College Recoletos who plays center because of his towering height which is 6’10, and RJ Jazul who is a standout from the very successful program of The Colegio De San Juan De Letran who was coached by Louie Alas. Their coaches from the past and of the present which is Ryko Toraman always salute their coachablity. Whenever he says to them that they got to do more slashing than three point shooting because their legs are getting exhausted already they would immediately agree and follow his instructions. It was not very easy for the team to adjust but with their listening skills and attentiveness and hardwork may it be on their practice sessions or on the drills- footworks, and hand and eye coordinations the team quickly grasped the motion offense that the Argentinians and the Europeans are known for and not the one on one offense. They are on a roll. Beating one team and another, the Smart Gilas Team Can’t be stopped and denied.
