MANILA, Philippines – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (GSP) is in the country to promote the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) to Filipinos.
St-Pierre arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) before 5 a.m. Thursday.
“It’s a long flight but I made it. It’s perfect,” he told the media.
He said his first visit to the Philippines is for the “promotion for UFC and of course, I spread the sport of MMA to different places.”
St-Pierre, who also goes by the moniker “Rush,” will be in the country for 3 days.
“It’s my first time and I already like it. Weather is great and people are very nice,” he added.
His Manila visit will end with an open training at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.
The 29-year-old Canadian’s well-rounded game has led to his domination of the UFC welterweight division by winning all of his last 7 fights against foes like fellow future Hall of Famers Matt Hughes and BJ Penn.
St-Pierre, who has 20 wins and 2 losses, will defend his title against Josh Koscheck in UFC 124 on December 11.
Balls Channel, the exclusive home of the UFC, earlier brought MMA legend Chuck Liddell and Filipino-American Brandon Vera to Manila to bring UFC closer to Filipino fans.
