Philippine National Basketball Team To Win Asian Games Again 2010

Among the 196 Filipino athletes who will participate in this year's Guangzhou Asian Games next month, the RP men's basketball team are one of the favorites.

Chito Loyzaga, the chairman of Philippine Sports Commission said “All eyes will be on basketball and how our team will perform.”

Caloy was a former RP team player who was a defensive player himself who won silver medal in the 1990 Asian Games held in Beijing. It was the best finish of the Philippine Team. He wants to see a tighter filipino defense against the other taller asian teams for them to be able to duplicate that performance in 1962.

Loyzaga said, “It depends on the luck of the draw and the pairings in the knockout phase.” They might face the asian champion Iran, Qatar, Japan and Chinese-Taipei. That's in group A.

In group B the China team without Yao Ming, South Korea, Jordan and Uzbekistan are waiting to them.

Loyzaga said, “We should first focus on overcoming this first hurdle (against Saudi Arabia),” . “I heard we haven’t scouted them yet so it’s going to be a concern.”

The National Team being led by Chris Tiu, will be strengthen by three great PBA players: Sol Mercado, Kelly Williams and Asi Taulava.
