UST Tigers Beat UE Red Warriors In UAAP Season 74 Basketball Game For a 2-0 Start
Yesterday it was Kiefer Ravena who had a career game in the UAAP as he scored 24 big points but today it was his dear friend Kevin Ferrer's turn to wow the crowd with his dazzling plays. Ferrer just had his best game in his rookie year for the UST Growling Tigers as he scored 19 points all in all in this victory of UST against the UE Red Warriors via 70-63. As a result, UST now shares the top spot of the team standings along with Ateneo. They both have 2 wins and no losses. UE on the other hand goes down in the cellar along with DLSU with no wins and 2 losses.
UST had this game right from the beginning. In fact their lead went up to as much as 20 points in the third quarter but due to offensive lapses and poor execution of plays UE was able to creep in and cut their lead down to 4 points in the last 30 seconds of the 4th quarter courtesy of Paul Zamar's lay-up and Sumang's 3-pointer. But UST was able to regain their composure after Jeric Fortuna made a three pointer to seal the deal for UST.
In the first quarter UST seemed disorganized that's why they can't get a comfortable lead over UE, but in the second quarter UST started to get their scoring rhythm back. They managed to build a 13 point lead, 35-22 by the end of the 2nd quarter.
In the third quarter, Jeric Fortuna led the Tigers in scoring. He had 21 points which was highlighted by a 3-pointer that increased their lead to 21 points, 53-32, with 3 minutes and 36 seconds left in third period. UE just traded baskets with them.
In the fourth quarter, UST started with a 21 point lead, 60-39. They looked poised in breaking this game wide open but UE suddenly doubled their effort after receiving some encouragement from the former King Warrior Elmer Espiritu who said to them, "Don't give up. No one in this Red Warrior team should give up!" Those words lifted their spirits as they made an impressive 20 to 3 run that brought down UST's lead to 4 points, 65-61 with 14.8 seconds remaining in the regulation. But it was just too late for UE. They opted to foul the Tigers to send them to the charity stripe but they appeared to have iced water in their veins as they made all their 6 free throws to ice the ball game.
The lone bright spot for UE was their 5th year player Paul Zamar who had 18 points and 4 rebounds. He needs more support from his teammates if they want to win some games this year.
