Calvin Abueva & Ian Sangalang MVP Candidates in NCAA Season 87: Either one of Them Will Win The MVP Award
Two players from the San Sebastian Stags, Calvin "The Beast" Abueva and Ian Sangalang are the two leading candidates to win the NCAA Season 87 MVP award.
Calvin Abueva and Ian Sangalang are placed 1st and 2nd respectively in the current MVP race. They are the leaders in the NCAA in terms of scoring and in terms of rebounding. Abueva averages 23 points per game while Sangalang averages 17.8 points per game. Abueva's highest scoring output so far in the NCAA is 34 points. That's the highest in the current season of the NCAA. Sangalang's rebounding prowess on the other hand was the best this season. He had a career high 25 rebounds in one of the Stags' game. That rebounding output of Sangalang caught the attention of the NCAA Press Corps and it prompted them to give him the Player of the Week plum.
The San Sebastian Stags are currently on an 11 game winning streak largely because of Ian and Calvin, and if they end up being the champions this year, for sure, either Abueva or Sangalang will win the MVP award. One of them will be able to match the achievement of Leo Najorda who won the MVP plum 8 years ago for the Stags.
The rookie coach of the Stags, Topex Robinson commented about the fine performances of Ian and Calvin. He said that:
“I know they’re capable of doing these kinds of efforts, they’re really the younger players’ sources of strength."
