Philippines' Smart Gilas Beats UAE In FIBA Asia Championship 2011 Opener: Philippines Starts FIBA Campaign 1-0

The Smart Gilas Pilipinas had a great win against the UAE Team to start their campaign in the FIBA Asia Championship 2011. It was as if they were not facing a difficult problem that barred two of their players, Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter from playing in the FIBA Asia. They just kept on attacking from all areas on the floor en route to blowing the game wide open as they beat the UAE Team via 95-52. As a consequence of this win, Philippines and China now share the top spot of the team standings in Group D. Tomorrow they will break the tie as they go head to head at 8:00 p.m..

When you take a look at the scoring per quarters of this game between UAE and Philippines: 17-12, 41-20, 69-35, 92-52, you'll notice that Philippines dominated UAE, they didn't let UAE win a single quarter of this game. All of the quarters were won by Philippines.

Mac Baracael, Asi Taulava and Marcus Douthit led the well balanced scoring attack for the Philippines. Baracael scored 15 points, Taulava had a double-double game with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Douthit added in 13 points.

Due to the great performance of his players against UAE, Coach Rajko can't seem to hide his excitement for their game tomorrow against China. He said that:

“I think we showed a lot of character to win today. This game warmed us up well for tomorrow (vs. China). I hope we can go at them full strength. But we will not give up without a proper fight.”
