DLSU Lady Archers Capture UniGames 2012 Women’s Volleyball Crown
By Val Marvin G. Macanas
The DLSU Lady Archers once again exhibited their excellent spiking prowess after winning the 2012 UniGames Women’s Volleyball Crown in Bacolod at the expense of their sister school, which happens to be the defending champs the USLS (University of St. La Salle) Lady Stingers.
Out of 30 plus participating teams, 2 La Sallian Schools slug it out in the UniGames 2012 Women’s Volleyball Finals last October 28, 2012 in Bacolod.
Both teams were undefeated coming into the Finals. That’s how dominant these 2 La Sallian Schools are.
The Taft Based Squad had the upper hand this time around. The Lady Archers won via 3 straight sets: 31-29, 25-19 and 25-14.
DLSU’s starting line-up in the Finals includes Marano, Gumabao, Galang, Tiu, Esperanza, Reyes, and Sison.
DLSU no longer have Cha Cruz, their go-to-gal and their leader for the past 4 years and their reliable libero Melissa Gohing.
Marano, Gumabao, Galang, their super rookie last year and their new Libero Sison, had to step up in this game. Good thing they delivered big time.
USLS on the other hand started with Mendez, Quijano, Orendain, Moralde, Dolar, Denila and Yanson.
DLSU had a big scoring run in the first set led by Marano. They were able to lead by 5 points, 14-9. But USLS came back as Orendain showed his spiking prowess. The score became 24-23 in favor of the Lady Stingers. After some furious rallies that wowed the crowed inside the USLS Covered Court, DLSU was able to win the first set via 31-29.
Unlike the first set, the succeeding sets were dominated solely by DLSU.
The Lady Archers sustained their momentum and dominated the 2nd and 3rd sets.
They pounded USLS to submission. The Lady Stingers started to become listless in the latter part of the 2nd set, giving DLSU a chance to establish a big 19-11 advantage. DLSU eventually took the 2nd set via 25-19.
That was the start of USLS’ downfall.
The 3rd set was the same as the 2nd set. It just proved that DLSU was too much for USLS to handle.
Thus, the Lady Archers went on to capture this year’s UniGames Title in Women’s Volleyball.
After the awarding ceremony, the star of the match, Miss Abi Marano said “it was a BLAST week! Thank you Lord for giving us a memorable UNIGAMES. What a sweet blessing!”
That was an intense game!! LORD all for you!!! Always! Champions! So happy!!, added Michelle Gumabao.
