Coach Tim Cone Talks About Scottie Thompson: Read it Here!
The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel roster is already heavy on the one and two positions, but Coach Tim Cone and the team management decided to snag another guard in Scottie Thompson. The decision is reminiscent of the 1993 PBA Draft wherein the Alaska Aces drafted Johnny Abarrientos. The move soon paid dividends as the Flying A gave the Aces a number of PBA Titles.
Because of that, Coach Tim can't help but compare Scottie to Johnny.
"Kinda like Johnny in 1993. We had a lot of guards but Johnny was just too good and we couldn't let him go. It's the same thing about Scottie. We may regret the pick (not getting a big man) down the line, but I don't think so. I think Thompson is gonna be special at some point," said coach Tim.
"Well, we just felt that Scottie is a special talent. If you will make me choose between a big man or a small man 90 percent of the time I'll take a big man. But this 10 percent was Scottie. We just felt that he was too good to pass up. We really had to get him. In any other draft we would have taken Torres but tonight we had to take Scottie," he added.
He also talked about the versatility of Thompson.
"We'll see. Like i said hes an uncommon talent so we'll figure out the best way to use him. If he needs to play some point we'll let him play some point. If he can play the off guard, we'll let him play some off guard. He's not a pure pointguard. That made him very attractive to us," highlighted the multi-titled PBA coach.
